India needs more domestic mobile phone manufacturers; ICEA chairman

Mobile phone manufacturing in India has experienced remarkable growth over the past decade, increasing by 21-fold to reach Rs 4100 billion in value terms. However, Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), emphasised that while government policies have been instrumental in this growth, the unpredictability stemming from certain actions of enforcement agencies needs to be addressed.

"Unpredictability in ease of doing business arising out of some actions of enforcement agencies needs to be checked. We need to build an environment of trust between enforcement agencies and the industry", said Mohindroo.

Speaking at an outreach program organised by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Mohindroo highlighted the significance of nurturing domestic champions in line with the government's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) initiative.

In a related development, the Enforcement Directorate has initiated legal action against former Lava managing director Hari Om Rai in connection with an alleged money laundering case involving Chinese smartphone maker Vivo, amounting to Rs 620 billion.
