Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw visited Alstom’s Savli facility in Vadodara, Gujarat, a key manufacturing hub for railway rolling stock in India. He reviewed operations with a focus on maintenance practices, praised Alstom’s customised design solutions for each order, and suggested that Indian Railways adopt similar innovations. He also proposed a joint training programme with Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya and recommended exposure visits for Production Unit General Managers. Discussions included integrating sensors and artificial intelligence for preventive maintenance.

The Savli facility produces advanced commuter and transit train cars and strongly supports the Government of India’s Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. Over 3,400 Indian engineers collaborate with 21 Alstom sites worldwide. Since 2016, India has exported 1,002 rail cars for global projects, including 450 cars built at Savli and supplied to Australia’s Queensland Metro project.

The Savli unit has shipped over 3,800 bogies to Germany, Egypt, Sweden, Australia, and Brazil, and more than 4,000 flatpacks to Vienna, Austria. Alstom’s Maneja unit has exported over 5,000 propulsion systems for international projects.

India is leading 27 international signalling projects and supporting 40 more globally. Alstom’s Digital Experience Centre in Bengaluru drives over 120 projects, focusing on next-generation signalling using IoT, AI, blockchain, and cybersecurity.

Exports of Indian rail products embody the vision to Design, Develop and Deliver from India to the world:
  • Metro Coaches – exported to Australia, Canada
  • Bogies – supplied to the UK, Saudi Arabia, France, and Australia
  • Propulsion Systems – shipped to France, Mexico, Romania, Spain, Germany, and Italy
  • Passenger Coaches – delivered to Mozambique, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka
  • Locomotives – exported to Mozambique, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Guinea

A robust supplier network near Savli, including Integra, Anovi, Hind Rectifier, Hitachi Energy, and ABB, supports fabrication, interiors, and electrical systems.

Speaking to the media, Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the impact of the Make in India and Make for the World missions, noting that railway component exports are creating jobs and building expertise in global standards – a major success of the initiative.

Alstom is the only multinational sustainable mobility provider in India with a full range of offerings, from cost-effective platforms to high-end innovations. With six industrial sites and four major engineering centres, Alstom serves both domestic and international projects. Supporting India’s freight and passenger revolution, Alstom continues to align with Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat while strengthening local sourcing and supply chains.
