HARTING strengthens additive manufacturing capabilities at Rahden

The new Centre of Competence Additive Manufacturing at HARTING focuses on a range of 3D printing processes and materials, supporting applications from prototyping through to initial series production. Sample components and practical examples demonstrate how additive manufacturing is applied in product development, manufacturing aids and specialised internal components.

Jörn Held, Expert in Industrial Engineering New Technologies at HARTING, said, “Through the targeted expansion of our additive manufacturing expertise, we are strengthening our innovative power, increasing our technological independence and creating the foundation for new product solutions and future-proof manufacturing processes.”

The systematic development of expertise plays a critical role. Unlike conventional methods, 3D printing requires close integration of design, material selection and production processes. In-house expertise enables the design of components tailored specifically for additive processes, utilising design flexibility while ensuring reproducible quality.

Additive manufacturing enables shorter development cycles, greater flexibility in implementing variants and more agile processes. With the new Centre of Competence, HARTING is consolidating this knowledge at its Rahden location, making it accessible across business functions—from initial concept development to industrial applications.

Heinz-Peter Einhoff, Global Director Center of Excellence Industrial Engineering, added, “Here in Rahden, we are pooling expertise to transfer additive manufacturing into industrial applications in a targeted manner and creating global added value.”

Additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3D printing, involves building components layer by layer using a digital model. Unlike conventional manufacturing, material is added only where required, enabling complex geometries, lightweight structures and high design flexibility.

Prototyping refers to the rapid creation of initial functional samples or models to test and validate concepts, assess designs and optimise processes before full-scale production.
