Vijay Chaudhry: Poor air quality poses serious threat to humans and machines

A lot of gases and VOCs are released in various industries like petrochemical, pulp & paper, etc. To curb the menace of air contaminants, the gas filtration system comes with solutions to improve the air quality in critical areas. In this interview, Vijay Chaudhry, President, Bry-Air, explains the impact of poor air quality on industries and the solutions offered by Bry-Air to improve air quality.

Why are air filtration systems important for industries?
Air & gas filtration systems play a crucial role across industries as they prevent electronic corrosion by removing air-borne molecular contaminants. The systems come with advanced solutions for neutralising harmful and corrosive gases from the atmosphere housing critical systems, such as data centers, server rooms, research labs, diagnostic systems, and cold storage. The air filtration system is required for corrosion control, odour control, and ethylene control in critical spaces for inhibiting the corrosion of sensitive equipment.

What are the factors driving the demand for air filtration systems in industries?
Air & gas filtration systems are very cost-effective in eliminating corrosive, toxic, and odourous gases from the air. Failing to install the system can lead to downtime that gives rise to other severe consequences. It leads to wear & tear, huge production loss, lay-up due to corrosion, e-corrosion, and also shut down in extreme cases.

As a leader in desiccant dehumidification technology, what kinds of solutions do you offer for air filtration? Which are the key industries served by you?
The gas phase filtration systems offered by Bry-Air provide relevant solutions for:
  • Corrosive gases control in data centers, power plants, fertilizer plant, chemical industry, pulp & paper etc.
  • Odour control for healthcare, mortuary, sewage plants, pulp & paper industry
  • Ethylene scrubber for food & beverage industry

What are the advantages of BryShield compared to other conventional air filtration systems?
The USP of BryShield lies in Bry-Air’s patented Honeycomb Chemical Filters technology – DRISORB. It has macro-porous desiccant-based honeycomb matrix filters for neutralising all the toxic gases to provide clean air. The filters are backed up with high bulk density, structural strength, and adsorption capacity for effectively removing particulates and gaseous contaminants from confined spaces. Along with this, BryShield comes in a compact form that can be easily mounted on the ceiling.

What are the key challenges before manufacturers (i.e. your customers) today with respect to handling air pollution and adopting sustainable practices? How is Bry-Air helping them to solve some of these challenges?
The indoor air quality (IAQ) today is worse than the outdoor air quality. It can pose serious threat to humans as well as machines. But the consequence is intensified in a factory setup with sensitive machines in the premises. The problem of poor IAQ is further compounded if the setup is situated in close proximity to landfill sites, sewage drains, and excess vehicular exhaust. It can intervene with the proper functioning of the equipment and in severe cases can result in downtime of the machines.

But a majority of people are under the misconception that installing precision air-conditioning can remove the gaseous contaminants from the air. In reality, advanced filtration systems are required for absorbing corrosive gases. Bry-Air comes with a range of gas filtration systems to prevent corrosion due to air pollution in the factory setup.

Could you please highlight some of your innovations (new products/solutions) for controlling air pollution?
We have recently launched BryShield for preventing electronic corrosion in small server rooms. Server rooms are home to sensitive electronic equipment which are susceptible to undergo micro and creep corrosion. BryShield is a first-of-its-kind, innovative air filtration system that aids in removing gaseous and particulate contaminants from the air. It prevents server failure and ensures uptime thereby ensuring smooth functioning of server and other sensitive equipment.

What are some of the emerging trends in the air filtration system sector at present?
Air and gaseous contaminants in the form of particulate matter have become a major challenge for industrial spaces. A lot of gases and VOCs are released in various industries like petrochemical, pulp & paper, etc. Likewise, the data centers, with various electronic equipment, are highly under the threat of electronic corrosion in the presence of airborne molecular contaminants. Even in the food & vegetable industry a lot of food is wasted due to ethylene causing over-ripening of fruits and vegetables. To curb the menace across various industries, the gas filtration system comes with solutions to improve the air quality in critical areas. For the food & vegetable industry, it offers ethylene scrubbers for ethylene removal to minimise the decay of food & vegetables.

What are your growth plans for your air filtration system business?
With businesses undergoing digital transformation, data centers are emerging as the backbone of the digital landscape for the storage of sensitive information. The sector is only going to grow with the practice of smart business across industries. Likewise, the market for air & gas filtration systems will also grow to curb the menace of airborne molecular contamination across the industries. Bry-Air is well equipped to cater to this growth and has already invested extensively in infrastructure to support the growth. Its innovative product offering for varied industries like data centres, etc. is well ahead of time and meets the current requirement of energy efficient solutions.
