VFlowTech, a leader in long?duration energy storage solutions, has entered into a strategic collaboration with the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT), the industry interface of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi). The partnership will focus on recovering high?purity vanadium from petroleum coke (petcoke) cinder, a by?product of India’s refining industry, to create battery?grade vanadium pentoxide (V?O?) for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs).

According to industry forecasts, the global VRFB manufacturing market is expected to grow at a 20–25% CAGR between 2025 and 2030, driven by increasing demand for grid?scale energy storage. The Asia?Pacific region is likely to dominate production and deployment, supported by favourable government policies. This collaboration represents a major step towards building India’s first circular vanadium ecosystem, transforming refinery waste into valuable materials, strengthening domestic supply chains, and supporting renewable energy deployment.

Backed by its recent USD?20?million Series?A+ funding, VFlowTech is investing in India’s clean?energy future by advancing local R&D and creating a ‘Made?in?India’ vanadium value chain.

“India’s refinery scale presents a unique opportunity to build a homegrown vanadium ecosystem. By converting waste into battery materials, we are addressing both energy security and industrial sustainability,” said Avishek Kumar, Co?Founder and CEO of VFlowTech.

“We are delighted to support this initiative. By establishing India’s first circular vanadium ecosystem, we aim to help achieve the target of 500?GW renewable capacity by 2030. This collaboration will further strengthen India’s energy transition,” said Anil Verma, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Delhi.

India added a record 29.52?GW of renewable energy in FY?2024?25, taking total capacity to 220.10?GW, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. While India is one of the world’s largest oil refiners, it imports most of its vanadium. The collaboration will enable domestic extraction from petcoke waste, advancing both economic and environmental sustainability.

VFlowTech’s next?generation VRFB systems, branded as PowerCubes, are designed for high?efficiency, long?duration storage. With a compact Power Stack design and high round?trip efficiency, they minimise energy loss and can operate at temperatures above?55?°C, making them ideal for tropical climates.

Founded in 2018, VFlowTech is a deep?tech company developing vanadium redox flow battery systems and hybrid batteries for long?duration energy storage. The company’s patented technology offers safe, scalable and sustainable energy storage with operational lifespans exceeding?25?years. VFlowTech has deployed its systems across more than?10?countries worldwide.

The Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) is IIT Delhi’s industry interface body supporting research translation, technology development, IP management, and start?up incubation. FITT runs programmes to strengthen entrepreneurship and technology commercialisation.
