US-India to establish world's first multi-chip fabrication unit in Jewar, UP

In a landmark agreement, the US military and India have partnered to set up the world's first multi-material fabrication unit dedicated to national security in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. Signed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden, this cutting-edge semiconductor plant will produce chips for advanced warfare technologies, including night vision devices, missile seekers, space sensors, drones, fighter jets, electric vehicles, military communications, radars, and jammers.

The plant, located near the upcoming Jewar Airport, will include a testing center, a center of excellence, a design hub, and two fabrication units. Sources indicate that this multi-chip military fabrication facility will facilitate significant technology transfer and is expected to reduce India's semiconductor imports for national security, currently amounting to over $1 billion annually. The move is projected to save the country approximately Rs 60 billion through import substitution.

This initiative is part of growing India-US cooperation under the Indo-Pacific Economic Corridor (ICET) and the CHIPS Act, aimed at strengthening semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. Supported by the US Space Force, the Indian Semiconductor Mission, and Indian firms Bharat Semiconductors and 3ediTech, the new facility—likely named "Shakti"—will enhance India's capacity for both chip design and fabrication, positioning it among a select group of nations with such advanced technological capabilities.
