UK cleantech firm GR2L secures £4 mn order for Solar Tech in India

According to a report from the PTI news agency, a clean technology company located in southeastern England has successfully secured a £4 million order to provide its innovative technology to a projected 2.0-gigawatt solar facility in Mundra, Gujarat. Gas Recovery and Recycle Limited (GR2L), an MSME business based in Surrey, asserts that it has developed and patented state-of-the-art technology designed to reduce energy consumption, carbon emissions, and the manufacturing cost of solar panels.

The support from UK Export Finance (UKEF), the export credit agency of the UK government, was instrumental in securing this order. UKEF provided a £475,000 guarantee through its Bond Support Scheme, significantly contributing to the successful bid, as reported.

Rob Grant, the CEO and founder of GR2L, expressed his optimism about this new opportunity, "Building upon our prior export achievements, the support from Lloyds Banks and UKEF has enabled us to seize this latest avenue for growth and further expand our well-established international presence. I anticipate the commissioning of our machinery by the end of 2023."

He also emphasised the environmental benefits of their technology, stating, "With the production of brand-new argon generating up to one tonne of carbon dioxide for every tonne of argon, our advanced gas recycling technology aids solar facilities in reducing their scope 3 CO2 emissions and enhancing the efficiency of solar cell production."

Solar panel manufacturers rely on argon gas to refine silicon crystals used in solar cells, a process that demands substantial amounts of argon, often necessitating the shipment of multiple tankers of the gas daily, as detailed in the report.

GR2L's Argon machinery, claimed to be a world-first innovation, enables the recycling of up to 95% of the argon used in solar cell production, as well as other advanced manufacturing processes such as microelectronics manufacturing, 3D metal printing, and aerospace heat treatments. The opportunity to supply this argon recycling technology to Mundra Solar Technology for the solar facility in Mundra was a significant development for GR2L, as reported.

The guarantee provided under UKEF's Bond Support Scheme allowed GR2L to recoup a portion of the cash deposit, granting them access to essential funds required to fulfil the Mundra contract and seize this export opportunity, according to the PTI report.
