The labour dispute between the United Auto Workers union and Detroit's Three automakers intensified as the union escalated its walkout, leading to the closure of Ford's largest factory and posing a threat to Stellantis, the maker of Jeep vehicles.

In an unexpected move on, 8,700 union members at Ford's Kentucky truck plant in Louisville left their jobs. Union President Shawn Fain hinted at further action against Stellantis, expressing hope for more productive talks, although he did not specify the potential outcomes.

Ford's truck plant, responsible for manufacturing heavy-duty F-Series pickup trucks and large Ford and Lincoln SUVs, represents a significant portion of the company's revenue, generating $25 billion annually. Fain emphasised the union's impatience with Ford's reluctance to negotiate a fair contract, justifying the walkout at the highly profitable plant.

The strike followed nearly four weeks of union-led walkouts against General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis, beginning on September 15, with one assembly plant from each company initially affected. The union's decision to expand the strikes, targeting specific plants, rather than involving all 146,000 UAW members simultaneously, indicated a strategic approach.

Ford executives asserted that they had made strong wage and benefit offers to the union. However, Fain rejected the company's offer, leading to the closure of the Kentucky Truck Plant. The on-going strikes have resulted in approximately 4,800 layoffs at factories not directly impacted by the strikes, as automakers seek to mitigate losses due to reduced production capacities caused by parts shortages.

The strikes have also highlighted contentious issues, such as the demand for defined benefit pensions and health insurance for retiring workers, as well as the union's push for unionisation in joint-venture electric vehicle battery factories to secure jobs and competitive wages amid the industry's shift to electric vehicles.

As the strikes continue, more workers may face layoffs at non-striking plants, and parts supply companies are expected to implement layoffs, exacerbating the economic impact of the labour dispute on various sectors.
