TÜV SÜD plans EV Battery Lab in Bengaluru, Aligned with Karnataka's EV Policy

The Karnataka government's upcoming electric vehicle (EV) policy, featuring subsidies for the establishment of testing facilities, has prompted German certification and auditing firm TÜV SÜD to announce plans for an EV battery lab. This facility will be part of the second phase of the recently inaugurated testing center in Bengaluru.

Ishan Palit, the company's chief operating officer, emphasised the crucial role of testing facilities in developing a comprehensive ecosystem for new technologies. According to Palit, providing testing and certification is essential for ensuring the safety of products entering the market, facilitating industry access to markets.

The initial phase of the Bengaluru testing centre, involving an investment of approximately Rs 135 crore, focuses on testing medical devices and electrical components. Palit expressed confidence in Karnataka's potential for substantial investment in the medical device sector, noting that the company has already hired a hundred personnel for the facility, with expectations of the number increasing to 200.

TÜV SÜD's new facility, covering three acres and featuring 70,000 square feet in the first phase, is the company's second lab in Bengaluru. The first one, established in 2005, is a food analytical, chemical, and microbiology laboratory in the Peenya Industrial Estate.

Patil, a representative of TÜV SÜD, stated that the company achieved a turnover of around Rs 500 crore from India in fiscal 2022-23. He anticipates a growth rate of 15% CAGR by the conclusion of fiscal 2023-24.

In a recent development, TÜV SÜD released a new standard for the certification of low-carbon hydrogen and blue hydrogen, along with their derivatives, at its knowledge centre in Bengaluru. Palit explained that these certifications address the transition phase, providing clear standards in the absence of internationally defined benchmarks like ISO for hydrogen. An example is CMS 70, which specifies that 70% of the energy used in hydrogen production must come from renewable sources, providing a measurable methodology to designate it as "green."
