TNPL unveils Rs 607 cr green initiatives and expansion plans

Tamil Nadu Newsprint & Papers (TNPL) has announced ambitious projects worth Rs 607 crore, focusing on energy efficiency enhancement through the renovation of steam and power systems (RSPS), the installation of a 2MW rooftop solar facility, and the construction of a 500 M3 wastewater treatment plant.

The Revamping of Steam and Power System (RSPS) #2 will be conducted to seamlessly integrate it with the existing coal feeding system and steam and power distribution network. ?We anticipate completion by June 2025, with an investment of Rs 520 crore, including Rs 100 crore to be allocated in the current fiscal year,? stated M Sai Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of TNPL.

The RSPS #2 project, initiated in 2019 but delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will proceed in phases. It involves the installation of two high-pressure boilers to ensure a consistent supply of utilities like steam and power for the mill operations.

Additionally, TNPL plans to implement a 2 MW floating solar project at an estimated cost of Rs 12 crore this fiscal year. The company, with the Government of Tamil Nadu holding a 35.32% stake, has already established captive power plants totaling 103.69 MW and wind farms with a capacity of 35.5 MW. In the financial year 2023, TNPL generated 394.51 lakh units of green power.

Speaking at the company?s annual general meeting, Sai Kumar outlined TNPL?s vision to become a market leader in paper and paperboards, aiming to achieve a production capacity of 1 million tonnes by 2030, up from the projected 6 lakh plus tonnes in FY24. The company is actively developing a roadmap for the next five years.

Furthermore, TNPL is exploring diversification into value-added products using paper and boards as raw materials. They are engaged in discussions with paper machine manufacturers to venture into new categories of value-added papers, aligning with their strategic goals.
