TKIL Industries ventures into green hydrogen with SoHHytec partnership

TKIL Industries Pvt. Ltd., formerly thyssenkrupp Industries India Pvt. Ltd., has entered the green hydrogen sector through a strategic investment in Swiss-based SoHHytec SA. This partnership grants TKIL exclusive rights to manufacture and deploy SoHHytec’s innovative hydrogen production technology in India, supporting the nation’s ambitious goal of producing 7.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030.

The collaboration focuses on SoHHytec’s proprietary artificial photosynthesis technology, which utilises solar and wind energy to achieve record-breaking efficiency in direct hydrogen production. Recognised as one of the most cost-effective solutions globally, this technology is set to transform India’s green hydrogen capabilities.

TKIL plans to deploy the technology across industrial hubs in India, targeting hard-to-decarbonize sectors such as steel, fertilisers, cement, bio-chemicals, and transportation. This move aligns with India’s renewable energy goals and the National Hydrogen Mission. Vivek Bhatia, Managing Director and CEO of TKIL Industries, stated, “Green hydrogen is vital for decarbonizing heavy industries. This partnership positions us to lead its adoption in India while advancing the ‘Make in India’ initiative.”

The partnership extends to building a localized supply chain for green hydrogen equipment manufacturing in India, reducing reliance on imports and strengthening domestic production. This effort aligns with government policies to bolster India’s industrial self-sufficiency.

Dr Saurabh Tembhurne, CEO, SoHHytec, emphasised the scalability and affordability of their technology, which offers the lowest cost per kilogram of green hydrogen and integrates seamlessly with renewable energy sources. “This partnership is pivotal for scaling hydrogen production in India,” he noted.

Hydrogen produced through this collaboration is expected to slash transportation costs by 50% per kilometer compared to traditional internal combustion engines. Designed to be flexible, off-grid capable, and recyclable, the technology is ideal for India’s diverse energy landscape.

As part of India’s broader strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, TKIL’s initial projects will be deployed in cities like Jaipur and Nagpur, with further announcements expected soon. This partnership underscores TKIL’s commitment to sustainability and emission reduction in high-growth sectors.
