Thermax, a leading provider of energy and environmental solutions, has announced a strategic partnership with Ceres Power Holdings plc (CWR.L), a prominent developer of clean energy technologies. This collaboration involves a non-exclusive global license agreement allowing Thermax to manufacture, sell, and service stack array modules (SAM) based on Ceres' advanced solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC) technology. Thermax will also develop and commercialise SAM balance of modules (SBM) and multi-megawatt SOEC electrolyser modules.

The partnership aims to accelerate the adoption of SOEC technology in India and globally, enhancing green hydrogen production. Thermax will utilise its expertise in heat integration and waste heat recovery to create a pioneering pressurised SAM and design SAM balance of modules, which will serve as a foundational element for developing large-scale SOEC electrolyser modules.

The collaboration promises to revolutionise hydrogen production by offering systems up to 25% more efficient than existing low-temperature electrolysis technologies. These systems will effectively use steam from industrial process heat and waste recovery, making them ideal for decarbonizing challenging industries like ammonia/fertiliser, steel, refineries, and chemical production.

Thermax plans to set up a manufacturing facility for these electrolysers, develop the supply chain, and localise critical components. This partnership positions Thermax among the few global players able to offer large-scale SOEC systems for commercial applications.

Ashish Bhandari, Managing Director & CEO, Thermax, stated, “India is making significant progress in adopting renewable energy sources, particularly green hydrogen, as the country aims to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030. Our partnership with Ceres will bring cutting-edge SOEC technology to India, leveraging our expertise in thermal management to provide efficient,cost-effective hydrogen production solutions and support global decarbonization efforts.”

Phil Caldwell, CEO, Ceres, added, “We are excited to partner with Thermax, a leader in energy and environmental engineering across India, Europe, and Southeast Asia. This agreement opens up the Indian market, which is becoming a key player in green hydrogen, green steel, and green ammonia. This partnership strengthens our global network and supports industrial decarbonization in a rapidly growing market.”
