TAITRA calls for adaptation to India's business ethos amid Foxconn controversy

Amidst allegations of hiring bias at Foxconn's Tamil Nadu plant, Taiwan's TAITRA stressed the importance of foreign firms, including Taiwanese companies, aligning with India's business ethos. The controversy arose following reports suggesting Foxconn's alleged reluctance to hire married women at its facility, which manufactures Apple iPhones in India. Foxconn, in response, refuted these claims, citing that 25% of its recent hires are married women and emphasising non-discriminatory safety protocols applicable to all employees.

James C F Huang, Chairman, TAITRA, highlighted that while Taiwanese companies enter India with goodwill, cultural adjustments are necessary. He highlighted Taiwan's robust regulatory framework ensuring equal rights for all employees, irrespective of gender. Huang acknowledged differences in business practices between Taiwan and India, suggesting that such issues are common for any foreign enterprise operating in India.  Reflecting on bilateral trade growth between India and Taiwan, Huang noted a substantial increase, with trade reaching $8.2 billion in 2023, marking a 28% rise in the first half of 2024.

He expressed optimism about expanding trade ties, particularly in India's burgeoning semiconductor market, where Taiwan plays a pivotal role.  The comments by TAITRA come amidst ongoing scrutiny by India's Ministry of Labour and Employment over the Foxconn hiring practices, underscoring broader implications for foreign investments in India's manufacturing sector.
