Survey: Export orders drive manufacturing activity to 10-month high

Growth momentum in India’s manufacturing sector picked up in April, with output rising at the fastest pace since June 2024. This was fuelled by the strongest surge in exports in 14 years, likely influenced by a production shift to India amid global trade tensions.

The HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) edged up slightly from 58.1 in March to 58.2 in April, marking the sharpest improvement in the sector’s health in ten months. The survey, which is based on responses from 400 manufacturing firms, uses the 50-point threshold to distinguish expansion from contraction.

Sub-sector data revealed robust growth across categories, with consumer goods manufacturers registering the fastest expansion. A major contributor to the recent boost in output growth was a sharp rise in new business. Survey participants linked this growth to stronger domestic and international demand. Notably, aside from January, new overseas business grew at its strongest pace in over 14 years at the start of the 2025-26 fiscal year. Respondents identified Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas as key regions driving robust demand.
