During the period from April to December 2023, Ashok Leyland (ALL) reported a substantial 64% year-on-year surge in the sales of medium and heavy commercial vehicle (MHCV) buses, reaching a total of 11,216 units.

Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles (VECV) experienced a growth of 24.7% in sales for light and medium-duty buses and a significant 36.9% increase for heavy-duty buses between April and December. The sales comprised 9,945 LMD buses and 1,369 HD buses.

Tata Motors, although not providing a detailed breakdown of its bus sales, achieved growth across all four quarters of 2023 in the passenger carrier segment. Notably, in the October-December period, Tata Motors posted a 19% increase in sales of passenger carrier commercial vehicles, totalling 7,704 units. Overall, Tata Motors' passenger carrier CVs achieved a remarkable 33% sales growth throughout 2023.

In a recent announcement, Tata Motors revealed that it supplied 100 electric buses to the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC). The company has, to date, delivered over 1,500 electric buses across various Indian cities, accumulating a total distance travelled exceeding 100 million kilometres with an impressive uptime of over 95%, as stated in a press release.

In December, Tata Motors secured an order from the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) for 1,350 units of the Tata LPO 1618 diesel bus chassis, specially designed for intercity and long-distance travel.

Ashok Leyland also celebrated a success in December, securing an order from the Tamil Nadu government for 552 ultra-low entry (ULE) diesel non-AC buses. The delivery of these buses is set to commence in April.

Girish Wagh, Executive Director at Tata Motors, expressed that the passenger commercial vehicles segment continued to demonstrate a consistent post-pandemic recovery, with sales showing an approximate 19% increase compared to Q3FY23.
