STL's Green Hydrogen deal fuels optical industry sustainability

Sterlite Technologies Ltd (STL), India's leading glass optical company based in Mumbai, has struck a significant deal with green hydrogen solutions provider Hygenco. In a groundbreaking long-term agreement, Hygenco will construct, own, and manage a green hydrogen facility for STL over the course of 20 years. This facility, set to be operational within the next 15-18 months, will rely on renewable energy sources, marking a pioneering initiative in India's optical industry. The project aligns seamlessly with STL's ambitious 'Net-Zero by 2030' goal.

STL specialises in materials science, photonics, and precision engineering, operating a cutting-edge semiconductor-grade Glass Preform plant in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. This Industry 4.0-powered facility is dedicated to the production of Glass Preforms, crucial components in optical fiber manufacturing. Hydrogen and oxygen play pivotal roles in this process, serving as essential elements for both optical fiber production and glassmaking from silica particles.

Traditionally, gases like hydrogen and oxygen have presented challenging areas for decarbonisation within the optical fiber value chain. STL and Hygenco's collaboration aims to achieve significant carbon abatement, targeting a reduction of approximately 30% year on year. Currently, STL employs electrolysers powered by conventional energy sources. With this partnership, STL is embarking on a transformative sustainability journey, harnessing the potential of green hydrogen as an eco-friendly solution to provide clean energy to its Glass plant.

Ankit Agarwal, Managing Director of STL, expressed enthusiasm about this collaboration, stating, ?Through this partnership with Hygenco, STL is embarking on a transformative journey towards sustainability, utilising the power of green hydrogen?an environmentally friendly solution that empowers our Glass plant with clean energy.?
