Singareni Thermal Power Plant embraces green hydrogen for sustainable energy future

The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) management has made a significant decision to shift towards sustainable practices at the 1200 MW Singareni Thermal Power Plant (STPP) located in the Jaipur area of Mancherial district. Under the guidance of Chairman and Managing Director N Sridhar, the company will transition to using green hydrogen, a cleaner alternative, to operate the power plant.

In a directive issued, N Sridhar instructed officials to explore the utilisation of solar energy for hydrogen production, with the goal of powering the STPP. Additionally, he emphasised the need to investigate the feasibility of establishing another green hydrogen plant. The Chairman also urged for the swift completion of ongoing projects, including Flue-gas desulfurisation (FGD) and Methanol initiatives at STPP, as well as the Geothermal project in Manuguru.

The STPP premises already house a 10 MW solar power plant and a 5 MW floating solar plant, both of which can be utilised for hydrogen production. Currently, the company generates hydrogen gas through thermal electricity and electrolysis chemical methods. The existing 600 MW generators at STPP utilise hydrogen as a coolant to manage heat, necessitating the presence of a hydrogen production centre within the plant. Approximately 10,000 cubic meters of hydrogen gas are produced and consumed annually, requiring 100 kilowatts of electricity for the process.

This move towards green hydrogen signifies a proactive step by SCCL in adopting sustainable energy solutions, contributing to environmental conservation and cleaner energy practices.
