SIAM advances India’s green mobility goals at 4th World Biofuel Day

New Delhi

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), under its Jaivik Pahal (Bio Initiative) campaign, hosted the 4th International Conference on World Biofuel Day 2025 in New Delhi, themed “Indian Auto Industry’s Contribution Towards a Biofuel Economy.” The event gathered senior government officials, global experts, industry leaders, and sustainability advocates to chart pathways for accelerating India’s biofuel-driven mobility.

The inaugural session, “Charting the Roadmap for Biofuel Adoption in the Country,” outlined policy, technology, and industry commitments required to speed India’s transition. Prashant K. Banerjee, Executive Director, SIAM, said the ethanol economy offers an opportunity to align climate action with national development, improving air quality and delivering rural prosperity.

Guest of Honour Sanjeev Chopra, Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution, noted India had achieved 20 per cent ethanol blending in 2025, five years ahead of target, enabled by the 2018 National Biofuel Policy. Brazilian Ambassador H.E. Kenneth Félix Haczynski da Nóbrega stressed the importance of regulatory stability, while R. S. Sachdeva of VE Commercial Vehicles spoke on biodiesel blending progress and early biogas integration.

Honda Motor’s Ryuta Niimura highlighted bioethanol’s carbon-neutral potential, and Kamal Kishore Chatiwal of Indraprastha Gas Ltd. projected 10 per cent biogas infusion in CNG by 2030. Niraj Shirgaokar of The Ugar Sugar Works advocated increasing ethanol blending to E25, E27, and E30 over time.

A context paper, “Ethanol’s Role in India’s Decarbonisation Journey,” was released. The first thematic session, “EBP: Beyond E20,” chaired by Puneet Anand of Hyundai Motor India, examined advancing beyond current targets. Policy and technical perspectives were shared by experts from Ricardo, NRI Consulting, Department of Science & Technology, Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell, Bureau of Indian Standards, and Shell India.

The second session, “Developing Advanced Biofuels in the Country,” chaired by Harjeet Singh of Hero MotoCorp, discussed innovations in 2G ethanol, compressed biogas, and low-carbon liquid fuels. Rajnath Ram of NITI Aayog called biofuels a strategic measure for climate action, energy security, and rural prosperity, citing the absence of abnormal wear from E20 in vehicles tested up to 1 lakh km.

The third session, “Sustainable Feedstock for Atmanirbhar Biofuel Production,” chaired by R. Ramaprabhu of Mahindra & Mahindra, covered feedstock optimisation through policy and technology. Aswani Srivastava, Joint Secretary (Sugar), said India produces 1,822 crore litres of biofuels, with sufficient capacity to maintain E20 blending, and is trialling sweet sorghum for water efficiency.

The conference reinforced India’s commitment to building an innovation-led biofuel ecosystem, underlining the importance of collaboration among industry, government, and research to meet clean mobility goals.
