Sembcorp Green Hydrogen Pte, in partnership with Japanese conglomerate Sojitz Corp and energy major Kyushu Electric Power, has formalised a memorandum of understanding to explore potential opportunities for green ammonia production.

Sembcorp Industries, based in Singapore, has disclosed its collaboration with two Japanese companies through its green hydrogen unit to supply green ammonia from India to Japan. This move is part of Sembcorp's strategy to reinforce its position as a significant provider of green energy. Sembcorp Green Hydrogen Pte, in partnership with Japanese conglomerate Sojitz Corp and energy major Kyushu Electric Power, has formalised a memorandum of understanding to explore potential opportunities for green ammonia production. The initiative aligns with the Japanese government's target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, using green ammonia as a crucial element in decarbonising the country's power supply mix.

In a statement, Sembcorp, supported by state-owned investor Temasek Holdings, emphasised the role of green ammonia in facilitating Japan's efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources. Last month, Sembcorp announced plans to invest approximately S$10.5 billion ($7.88 billion), constituting around 75% of its total investments between 2024 and 2028, with the aim of bolstering renewable energy growth and achieving a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2028. Additionally, the collaboration is expected to extend Sembcorp's presence in India, where it already maintains a gross renewable portfolio of 3.7 gigawatts (GW).
