Sanjay Garg Appointed Director General of BIS, to Lead India’s National IEC Committee

Sanjay Garg, a senior IAS officer of the IAS-1994 batch from the Kerala cadre, assumed charge as the Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the national standards body of India, on 1 November 2025.

With over three decades of diverse administrative experience, Garg brings expertise in strategic planning, policy formulation, and implementation across multiple sectors. His career spans areas such as agriculture, food logistics, defence industry, industrial promotion, finance, and various social sectors at both State and National levels.

Prior to his appointment as the Director General of BIS, Sanjay Garg served as Additional Secretary at the Department of Agriculture, Research and Education (DARE) and Secretary at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

During his tenure at DARE and ICAR, Garg led the digital transformation of agricultural research management and administration, leveraging IT solutions. He also played a key role in expanding the Kisan Sarathi portal, a platform that directly connects farmers with agricultural scientists.

His experience also includes managing and administering World Bank projects in India, promoting and deregulating the defence industry sector, and leading various initiatives for the promotion of the leather industry and other industrial sectors.

As the Director General of BIS, Sanjay Garg will also serve as the President of India’s national committee in the International (IEC).
