SAIL partners with BHP to decarbonize steelmaking in India

The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), the country’s largest state-owned steel producer, has joined forces with global resources giant BHP to explore decarbonization solutions for steel production in India. This collaboration follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two companies, aiming to identify and implement low-carbon pathways for steel manufacturing through the blast furnace (BF) route.

The partnership will focus on testing alternative reductants, such as hydrogen and biochar, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in SAIL’s integrated steel plants. The initiative aligns with India’s broader climate commitments and aims to support the transition to sustainable steel production technologies.

Amarendu Prakash, Chairman, SAIL expressed optimism about the initiative, stating, “SAIL is committed to exploring sustainable ways to produce steel and addressing the need to align the sector with climate goals. This partnership with BHP is a step forward in that direction.”

Rag Udd, Chief Commercial Officer, BHP, emphasised the importance of collective efforts in tackling the decarbonization challenge, noting, “We must leverage shared expertise and resources to develop technologies that could significantly reduce carbon emissions in the steel industry, both in India and globally.”

The partnership will also focus on building local research and development capabilities to support the adoption of cleaner technologies in the mid-to-long term, making it a critical step in advancing the decarbonization of the steel sector.
