Safran and BEL partner to manufacture HAMMER weapon in India

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and France’s Safran Electronics & Defense have signed an MoU to establish a joint venture for manufacturing, customising, sales, and maintenance of the HAMMER (Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range) weapon system in India. Known for its high precision and modular design, HAMMER is a combat-proven air-to-ground weapon compatible with platforms like Rafale and LCA Tejas.

The MoU was signed by K V Suresh Kumar, Director- Marketing, BEL, and Alexandre Ziegler, Executive VP, Safran Electronics & Defence, in the presence of Manoj Jain, Chairman, BEL and Franck Saudo, CEO, Safran at Aero India.

As part of the partnership, BEL and Safran plan to set up a Center of Excellence focused on enhancing India’s defence capabilities, supporting manufacturing, engineering, and services like maintenance, repair, and overhaul of optronics and navigation equipment for the Indian armed forces. Safran will implement a knowledge transfer program, with production shifting to India in phases, led by BEL’s final assembly, testing, and quality assurance.

This collaboration aligns with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, aiming to establish a cutting-edge production facility in India, reduce import dependency, and strengthen the country’s self-reliance and operational readiness in defence.
