RoDTEP Scheme Extended to E-Commerce Exports for Boost in Trade Benefits

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the government has opted to extend the advantages of the export-boosting initiative known as Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) to include e-commerce exports.

Implemented three years ago, the RoDTEP scheme involves refunding non-creditable central, state, and local levies embedded in the inputs paid by exporters.

At present, e-commerce exporters are excluded from RoDTEP benefits. The Commerce Ministry will soon issue a notification stating that RoDTEP will be accessible for e-commerce, and any necessary IT enablement will be facilitated by the ministry, according to a senior government official.

Estimating e-commerce exports proves challenging due to a significant portion being integrated into merchandise exports by major companies like Amazon and Walmart. Considering postal and courier exports, India currently exports goods through e-commerce valued at approximately $1 to $1.5 billion, constituting a fraction of the total $421 billion in exports.
