RINL aims to manufacture 55,000 forged wheels, sets up a new factory in UP

State-owned steel producer, RINL (Rashtriya Ispat Nigam) plans to produce 55,000 wheels this fiscal year to meet demand from Indian Railways, said its CMD, Atul Bhatt. A forged wheel factory with a capacity to produce one lakh forged wheels annually has been established at Lalganj, Uttar Pradesh, at an estimated cost of Rs 2,350 crore.

RINL supplied 2,465 Loco wheels and 2,639 LHB wheels to Railways in FY23. A preliminary Acceptance Certificate (PAC) has been issued for the plant and very soon production will be ramped up to 55,000 wheels in the current fiscal to meet the demand of Railways, he mentioned to PTI.

The first shipment of 51 loco wheels from the steel manufacturer's Rae Bareli factory in Uttar Pradesh to the Railways was flagged off in December 2021, marking the beginning of the supply of wheels. According to Bhatt, the national transporter will be able to source wheels made in India that are of higher quality than wheels from other countries if the factory is used to its intended 50 per cent capacity.

The CMD further said that the plant is one of the most modern plants in the world and the first of its kind in India with state-of-the-art technology and the highest level of sophistication and automation. The forged wheels produced here can meet the requirement of high-speed trains that run at a speed of 200 kilometres per hour.

With the addition of a few facilities, the plant's yearly capacity could be increased to 2 lakh wheels, meeting demand both domestically and abroad, he claimed. Under the direction of the Ministry of Steel, RINL manufactures special steel, including coils, rounds, and billets of wire rods in various grades and specifications. It is the nation's first integrated steel factory with a shore-based base.
