RIL electrolyser giga factory to be operational by 2026

Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) is on track to have its electrolyser giga factory operational by 2026, according to Chairman Mukesh Ambani, who made the announcement during the company's 47th annual general meeting on August 29. This facility will play a crucial role in producing green hydrogen and green fuels at the lowest possible cost.

"We have commenced work on the fully automated multi-gigawatt (GW) electrolyser manufacturing facility on the west coast of India. The factory will be highly adaptable, supporting a range of technologies, including alkaline, PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolysis, and AEM (Anion Exchange Membrane) electrolysis," Ambani stated.

Electrolysers are essential for green hydrogen production, as they use electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. In addition to Reliance, other major companies like Larsen & Toubro and Tata Steel are also investing in electrolyser manufacturing.

Reliance plans to integrate its solar and wind energy storage ecosystem into the electrolyser manufacturing facility. This move aligns with the company's goal to achieve Net Carbon Zero status by 2035. Ambani also mentioned that Reliance is building capabilities for future electrolyser-based technologies to address challenges related to energy efficiency and reducing capital costs.

The company aims to make clean energy not only available but also affordable, ensuring energy self-sufficiency for India. In the FY24 annual report released on August 7, Ambani highlighted Reliance's ongoing efforts to explore technologies for carbon capture and recycling.

Additionally, Reliance is developing a giga complex spread over 5,000 acres in Jamnagar, Gujarat, which will include five giga factories dedicated to photovoltaic panels, fuel cell systems, green hydrogen, energy storage, and power electronics. The complex is expected to be commissioned this year.
