RACE Energy launches battery swapping for E-Tuk Tuks in Sri Lanka

Hyderabad-based RACE Energy, a deep-tech company specialising in electric vehicle infrastructure for battery swapping, has strategically entered international markets by launching its services in Sri Lanka.

In collaboration with Lanka E-Mobility Solutions (LeMS), RACE Energy has initiated a pilot program for its battery swapping technology under the 'e-wheel' brand, focusing initially on electric three-wheelers in Colombo.

The pilot launch involves 25 vehicles and 3 swapping stations in Colombo, with plans to expand to Galle and Kandy. RACE Energy aims to scale the program rapidly, reaching 500 vehicles within the next 3-6 months. The company's 'pay-as-you-go' solution and efficient swapping process are anticipated to benefit 1.2 million of Sri Lanka’s three-wheeler (known as 'Tuk') drivers.

Arun Sreyas, Co-Founder of RACE Energy, emphasised, “Our swappable batteries are the most advanced, lightweight, safe, and energy-dense in the market. The decision to expand internationally, starting with Sri Lanka and partnering with LeMS, the country's largest three-wheeler player, is driven by shared market and environmental dynamics between India and Sri Lanka. Additionally, the pressing need for electric solutions in Sri Lanka, currently facing petrol shortages, reinforces our commitment to addressing global mobility challenges.”

Gautham Maheswaran, Co-Founder of RACE Energy, highlighted the company's success in Hyderabad's EV market and its role as a leader, catering to over 50% of the region's EV segment. He added, “As the first battery swapping company to receive the AIS 156 Phase-2 certifications, we continuously strive to set new benchmarks in the industry. Through the pilot in Sri Lanka, we aim to extend our instant swapping technology not only in India but also internationally, contributing to the widespread adoption of e-mobility.”

Shirendra Lawrence, Co-Founder and Director of Lanka e-Mobility Solutions, emphasised the efficiency of the conversion process, where the replacement of conventional petrol engines with electric motors and drivetrains takes just two hours. Lawrence stated, “With Sri Lanka having more three-wheelers per capita than even India, the birthplace of these vehicles, we at LeMS are not just providing three-wheeler owners with a cost and time-effective option for electrification but also making a significant positive impact on the environment.”
