MIDHANI elevates global presence, pioneering critical aerospace materials

Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI), a defence public sector undertaking, has played a crucial role in both the Chandrayaan and upcoming Gaganyaan missions. Expanding its global presence, MIDHANI is now supplying essential materials for the production of aircraft engines and aerospace vehicles.

According to sources within MIDHANI, the company has been providing nickel-based alloys to a British aerospace firm through a Navratna defence company, creating vital international exposure for indigenous defence firms. This move is particularly significant as India aims to finalize a deal with US-based GE Aerospace for the domestic manufacturing of F414 fighter jet engines.

The initiative aligns with India's pursuit of self-reliance in aero engine manufacturing, complementing the progress made in avionics. MIDHANI has also been seeking development certification from an American aerospace company, ensuring the international quality of its products. These materials possess unique properties, such as the ability to withstand temperatures exceeding 1000 degrees Celsius produced by aero engines, making them lighter than conventional materials.

MIDHANI's visibility in Europe is on the rise, benefiting from disruptions in the international supply chain caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with an indigenous private defence player to explore manufacturing critical materials as an import substitution strategy.

When contacted, CMD Dr SK Jha revealed that MIDHANI's latest export volume reached Rs 38 crore, with a global order book of Rs 78 crore and a target of Rs 100 crore for the fiscal year 2023. Dr Jha emphasized the company's ambitious plan to focus on the aerospace segment, investing Rs 600 crore in modernization and expansion projects in FY23.

MIDHANI is actively involved in supplying critical materials for projects such as the HAL's Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) and the Kaveri dry engines, demonstrating its commitment to innovation and capability enhancement. The company has diversified its portfolio, contributing to the defense sector by supplying materials for combat jets, M-17 helicopters, tanks, and introducing "Hastealloy," a specialized steel grade for environmental purposes in thermal power plants.
