Mahanagar Gas partners with IBC to build lithium-ion cell plant in Bengaluru

Designed to meet India’s specific needs, the lithium-ion cells offer features like long warranties, fast charging, safety, high-temperature performance, recyclability, and easy integration into battery packs.
Mahanagar Gas Ltd. (MGL) has entered a joint venture with the US-based International Battery Co. (IBC) to establish a lithium-ion cell manufacturing plant in Bengaluru. The venture marks MGL’s latest expansion into the energy sector, following investments in liquified natural gas, retail, compressed biogas, and electric vehicle manufacturing. Ashu Shinghal, Managing Director, MGL, highlighted that entering battery manufacturing will enhance the company’s role in the clean energy transition.
Designed to meet India’s specific needs, the lithium-ion cells offer features like long warranties, fast charging, safety, high-temperature performance, recyclability, and easy integration into battery packs. These cells are currently in customer qualification trials with Indian clients.
Priyadarshi Panda, CEO, IBC, stated that the joint venture aims to create one of India’s first gigafactories based on a future-ready prismatic cell format, bolstering India’s domestic supply chain and reducing foreign exchange expenditures.
