L&T Semiconductor Technologies, the semiconductor arm of infrastructure giant Larsen and Toubro, announced a partnership with US-based tech leader IBM to drive research and development efforts focused on advanced processor design. This collaboration aims to target areas like edge devices, hybrid cloud systems, mobility, industrial applications, energy solutions, and servers.

Sandeep Kumar, CEO, L&T Semiconductor Technologies, highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating, "This is a pivotal moment for India’s semiconductor ecosystem. Semiconductors are transforming industries and reimagining traditional architectures. Our collaboration with IBM is designed to leverage our expertise in semiconductor design and IBM’s advanced processors to create the next generation of technology products."

The collaboration will prioritise innovation, functionality, and performance to deliver secure, scalable computing solutions across various applications. Both companies also view the partnership as a means to support India’s ambitions to become a global leader in semiconductor technology.  IBM, which has been actively involved in high-performance computing in India, sees this collaboration as part of its broader strategy to support India's digital transformation and economic growth.

Mukesh Khare, General Manager, IBM Semiconductors and Vice-President of Hybrid Cloud Research at IBM, emphasised the potential impact, stating, "This partnership is a testament to our commitment to advancing AI processor design and semiconductor technologies in India."

A few months ago, L&T Semiconductor Technologies signed a memorandum of understanding with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) to accelerate processor design and manufacturing for high-performance computing (HPC) in India.

Sandip Patel, Managing Director, IBM India and South Asia, expressed excitement about the opportunity to further the semiconductor industry in India through this collaboration.

IBM’s extensive expertise in semiconductor and processor design, coupled with L&T’s cutting-edge capabilities, is expected to significantly contribute to the growth of India’s semiconductor sector, which plays a crucial role in the global AI revolution.
