L&T Construction wins turnkey contract for Amaala's Sustainable Mega Project in Saudi Arabia

Larsen & Toubro's Construction division has been selected as the turnkey Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the Amaala project in the Red Sea region of Saudi Arabia, focusing on renewable energy generation and utilities.

Situated within the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Natural Reserve along Saudi Arabia’s northwestern coast, Amaala is an ultra-luxury destination covering 4155 square kilometres. The project encompasses pristine landscapes, diverse natural ecosystems, and a rich local heritage. Upon completion, Amaala will feature 25 hotels, 900 luxury residential units, high-end retail establishments, fine dining, wellness, and recreational facilities.

The consortium of Masdar, a clean energy powerhouse from the UAE, and French utility EDF has signed the concession agreement for the fully integrated utility project. Larsen & Toubro has entered into an EPC agreement with the project sponsors, EDF and Masdar.

With a commitment to going beyond sustainability and making a regenerative impact on the environment, Larsen & Toubro's awarded project will include an optimised off-grid renewable energy system, comprising a ~250MWp Solar PV plant and a >700MWh Battery Energy Storage System.

The power systems scope involves biofuel-based internal combustion engines, three Gas Insulated Substations, high voltage transmission lines, and medium voltage distribution networks. Water systems scope includes constructing a 37 MLD Seawater Reverse Osmosis Plant, 6 MLD Sewage Treatment Plants, marine works, tank farms, potable water network, wastewater network, and treated sewage effluent network.

T Madhava Das, Whole-Time Director & Sr Executive Vice President (Utilities) at Larsen & Toubro, commented on the development, stating that the prestigious contract award highlights the synergistic strength of L&T Construction's diverse offerings in providing innovative solutions for customers seeking sustainable, clean, and reliable electricity and water systems.
