JSW Group, under the leadership of Sajjan Jindal, a prominent industrial powerhouse with a valuation of $23 billion, has recently unveiled plans to establish an industrial park in Salboni, Bengal. This initiative aims to attract both domestic and international investors as well as diverse industries. The conglomerate, known for its diverse portfolio spanning steel, energy, cement, and infrastructure sectors, has allocated approximately 3,000 acres for the development of this industrial park.

This decision signifies a departure from their earlier intention of returning the land to the state government. Originally leased in 2008 for an integrated steel and power plant, the project never materialised, leaving the land largely unused. Earlier this year, JSW Group had expressed interest in returning the land, retaining a portion for their existing cement unit and future expansions. However, policy changes introduced by the Bengal government, including the option to convert leasehold land to freehold, prompted JSW Group to reconsider their stance.

The state government's efforts to promote industry, especially under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee, have garnered praise from Sajjan Jindal. He expressed optimism about Bengal's potential to regain its industrial prominence and emphasized that the land in Salboni would play a pivotal role in attracting international investors and various industries.

The decision has been well-received by the state administration, which believes that JSW Group, with its track record, is better suited to develop the industrial park than the government itself. Already, there is interest from local industries, with companies like Captain Steel India Ltd, endorsed by former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, expressing intent to establish a sponge iron-based plant within the Salboni industrial park.

The Salboni plot, spanning 28 square kilometres and protected by a 34-kilometer-long wall, has faced challenges in the past, including violent protests during the initial phases of the steel plant project in 2008. Despite setbacks such as a Maoist attack and issues with raw material supply, JSW Group's continued commitment to the region underscores their confidence in Bengal's industrial potential.
