JSW Defence partners with Shield AI; Plans $90 million investment over two years

JSW Defence Private Limited, part of the $24 billion JSW Group, has announced a strategic partnership with U.S.-based Shield AI to indigenise and manufacture Shield AI’s V-BAT, a Group 3 Unmanned Aerial System (UAS). The collaboration includes a $90 million investment over two years, with $65 million allocated within the first year for establishing a manufacturing facility, compliance programs, and workforce training.

This investment will enable JSW Defence to build a local supply chain and advanced manufacturing capabilities in India, including assembly, testing, and maintenance of the V-BAT aircraft. Parth Jindal, JSW Group highlighted that the partnership will allow them to scale indigenous V-BAT production, provide training for flight operations, and offer full maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services to the Indian Armed Forces.

The V-BAT is a versatile, fixed-wing UAS with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities, designed for long-endurance intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Currently deployed by U.S. Marine Expeditionary Units and other forces worldwide, the V-BAT features a patented ducted design, allowing rapid deployment and minimal logistical requirements.

Sarjan Shah, India MD, Shield AI, emphasised the importance of this investment in aligning with India and the U.S.’s vision for a closely integrated defence supply chain.
