IOCL proposes doubling LNG Capacity at Ennore Terminal to meet growing demand

Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) is proposing an expansion of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal situated within the Kamarajar Port in Ennore, Chennai.

Currently, the terminal has a processing and storage capacity of 5 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) of LNG. The company intends to double this capacity due to the anticipated surge in demand from the Ennore LNG Terminal, expected to surpass the existing 5 MMTPA by 2025–26.

No additional land will be required for this expansion, as all facilities will be developed within the existing terminal complex spanning 128 acres. The estimated cost of the project is approximately Rs 3,000 crore.

The construction of the import, storage, and regasification terminal within the Kamarajar Port in Ennore commenced in 2015 and began operations in 2019. The proposed project is slated to be completed in 54 months from the date of the Board’s approval. It will feature LNG storage tanks, regasification systems, LNG pumps, and vaporizers.

The current terminal receives imported LNG through ships at a dedicated LNG Berth constructed within the Kamarajar Port. The gas is stored in two tanks, each with a capacity of 1,80,000 cubic meters, at a temperature of minus 162 degrees Celsius.

The expanded LNG import and regasification terminal is expected to contribute to the growth of the industrial sector in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka by supplying clean energy. The re-gasified LNG will be distributed to power generation plants, fertiliser plants, and other industrial units. Additionally, the gas will be available for city gas distribution, vehicle supply, and piped natural gas for residential use.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests has provided Terms of Reference to Indian Oil LNG Pvt Ltd, a joint venture company of IOCL, mandating the preparation of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report and the acquisition of environmental clearances.
