India's RE capacity surges 2.35 times in a decade: Minister for Power

Over the past decade, the capacity of renewable energy in India has surged by 2.35 times, according to the Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy. Highlighting the remarkable growth in renewable energy, the Minister credited the government's strategic initiatives since 2014. These include a substantial increase in the target of the National Solar Mission from 20,000 MW to 100,000 MW, the exemption of Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) charges for solar and wind power projects commissioned by June 30, 2025, and a graded ISTS charge thereafter.

Other key measures encompass the declaration of a trajectory for Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) up to 2030, the introduction of various schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan Yojana (PM-KUSUM) and the Grid Connected Solar Rooftop Programme, and the establishment of Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Parks. The government has also laid new transmission lines, created additional sub-station capacity, implemented standardised bidding guidelines, and issued orders to ensure timely payments to renewable energy generators. Notably, the National Green Hydrogen Mission has been launched with the objective of positioning India as a central hub for green hydrogen production and exports. Furthermore, various notifications and rules have been introduced to promote and regulate renewable energy, including the Green Energy Open Access Rules 2022, Late Payment Surcharge Rules 2022, and Electricity Amendment Rules 2022, incorporating a provision for a Uniform Renewable Energy Tariff for the Central Pool.
