Indian Auto sees surge in apprentice recruitment with PLI expansion

A recent report predicts a substantial surge in apprentice recruitment in the Indian automobile sector, primarily attributed to the expansion of the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. The report, courtesy of TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, anticipates a noteworthy increase of 70-80% in apprentice hiring.

The burgeoning demand for apprenticeships can also be traced back to the auto industry's robust performance, driven by favourable macroeconomic conditions and a positive industry outlook spanning all its segments. This heightened demand is evident in various regions, including states such as Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, as well as metropolitan cities like Pune, Chennai, and Bengaluru.

TeamLease reveals that the PLI scheme has successfully attracted 75 new entrants, including prominent names like Maruti Suzuki, Hero MotoCorp, Bosch, and Toyota Kirloskar Auto Parts.

Sumit Kumar, Chief Business Officer of TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, remarked, "The extension of the PLI scheme, backed by a significant investment of Rs 25,938 crore, underscores the immense growth potential of the sector. The government's objective of generating 148,000 new jobs is a testament to the scheme's potential impact. Currently, around 21,123 individuals have already found employment, showcasing the industry's rapid expansion. However, this accelerated growth has also exposed a skills gap within the sector."

The report highlights that degree apprenticeship programs are emerging as a viable solution to address this skills gap.

"In response to these challenges, degree-linked apprenticeships within the automotive sector are gaining prominence, providing access to coveted positions like automotive service technicians, assembly line operators, and shopfloor engineers. These programs offer competitive stipends ranging from Rs 12,500 to Rs 13,300 per month," the report adds.

Kumar further emphasises, "Through these degree apprenticeship programs, young talents will gain specialised expertise in cutting-edge areas such as electric powertrain technology, battery technology, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. This hands-on experience equips them to excel in roles that are not only pivotal for the future of automotive manufacturing but also fulfil the current industry demands."
