Indian aerospace manufacturers seek global orders; ask GOI for policy push

The surge in orders has prompted global aerospace suppliers to ramp up sourcing from India. Airbus, in particular, is strengthening ties with Indian partners for various functions such as IT, engineering, and production.
Indian aerospace manufacturers are banking on a surge in orders from Indian airlines to attract more business from global giants like Airbus and Boeing, while also seeking support from the government to boost the sector.
"We have to be in line with what our procurement of aircraft is. If India has a 10% share of the order book, it should also have a 10% procurement share - it's a fair ask," said Aravind Melligeri, Chairman- Components Maker, Aequs; one of the top suppliers for Airbus.
Currently, IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa have an order book of nearly 1,700 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing, which is projected to increase to around 2,000 by March 2025, according to aviation consultancy firm CAPA.
Melligeri highlighted that Aequs, with a revenue of Rs 10 billion in FY23, is securing new contracts due to challenges faced by suppliers in other regions to meet rising demand. He emphasised the necessity of government intervention to promote indigenous aerospace manufacturing, citing policies in the Middle East that mandate local production as an example to follow.

Airbus is collaborating with the Tata Group to establish a final assembly line for civil helicopters in India.
Dynamatics Technologies, recently awarded a contract by Airbus to manufacture doors for the A220 family of aircraft, emphasised India's appeal to global manufacturers due to its abundant pool of skilled engineers. Udayant Malhoutra, CEO, Dynamatics, highlighted the significant opportunities presented by India's skilled workforce and emphasised the potential for growth in the aerospace sector.
Overall, the Indian aerospace industry is poised for expansion, driven by robust demand from domestic airlines and increased collaboration with global players, supported by favorable government policies.
