India levies anti-dumping duty on chemical imports from China, Korea & Thailand

India has imposed an anti-dumping duty of up to $557 per tonne on Epichlorohydrin, a chemical primarily used in the adhesive industry, imported from China, Korea, and Thailand. This duty, valid for five years, aims to protect domestic manufacturers from underpriced imports.

The decision follows a recommendation by the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) under the Commerce Ministry, which found that Epichlorohydrin was being sold in India below standard prices from these countries. The Department of Revenue announced the duty in a recent notification, stating it would remain effective unless revised or revoked.

Anti-dumping investigations assess whether an influx of low-cost imports harms domestic industries, with such duties helping to establish fair competition. This action is part of India’s broader measures to prevent unfairly priced imports, particularly from China, in line with World Trade Organization (WTO) guidelines.
