India explores pipeline network for cost-effective green hydrogen transport

India is advancing its green hydrogen strategy by launching a comprehensive study to assess the viability of transporting green hydrogen through dedicated pipelines from renewable energy zones to ports. This initiative aims to explore cost-effective alternatives to traditional transmission lines, optimising both domestic use and export potential.

Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson, Central Electricity Authority (CEA), explained that the study is evaluating two transportation methods: using transmission lines to transfer power from renewable zones like Rajasthan to port areas, or employing a pipeline network. A collaborative team from GAIL, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), NTPC, and CEA is investigating these options, particularly focusing on the cost advantages of pipelines over transmission lines.

Preliminary findings from a study on the Rajasthan to Paradip port route suggest that pipelines could be a more economical choice for transporting green hydrogen. This approach aligns with the government’s strategy to reduce reliance on Chinese imports and enhance domestic green hydrogen production capabilities, positioning India as a global leader in this sector.

The Ministry of Power and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) are actively involved in these efforts. In March 2024, PNGRB indicated plans to evaluate the feasibility of blending hydrogen with natural gas in the country’s existing 33,000 km natural gas pipeline network, of which 24,000 km are operational.

Experts note that pipeline transport could be more cost-effective for large volumes of hydrogen but also present technical challenges, such as steel embrittlement, hydrogen permeation, and the need for advanced compression technology. The ongoing study, in partnership with the World Bank, will assess hydrogen demand and supply, evaluate the compatibility of existing pipelines, and analyze commercial feasibility.

Previous research by Engineers India Limited (EIL) and IIT Kanpur has shown that up to 3% green hydrogen can be safely blended into existing city gas distribution pipelines, suggesting a gradual scaling up of hydrogen integration into India's gas network. 

This exploration of pipeline transport for green hydrogen supports India’s broader energy transition goals, including achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030. As the global focus on cleaner energy solutions intensifies, India’s investment in green hydrogen infrastructure is expected to strengthen domestic energy security and position the country as a major player in the global green energy market, contributing towards the net-zero emissions target by 2070.
