India accelerates drive for homegrown solutions for marine gas turbines

India is accelerating its efforts to create homegrown solutions for marine gas turbines (MGT) that drive the Indian Navy's warships and submarines. This urgency stems from the disruption caused by the conflict in Ukraine, which has affected Zorya-Mashproekt, the primary supplier of MGTs to the Indian Navy.

In pursuit of this goal, public sector enterprise Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and private sector company Bharat Forge have been individually engaged to develop and deliver MGTs tailored to the specific requirements of the Indian Navy. Additionally, the Indian Navy has offered insights to BHEL to support the equipment and spare parts development process.

The Ukraine-Russia conflict has severely impacted the supply chain for MGT spares and components. This domestic development initiative aligns with the Make in India initiative, aiming to reduce reliance on imported defense-related equipment. Most of the Indian Navy's Russian-origin warships currently rely on Ukrainian gas turbines, including four frigates currently on order, as exemplified by the $950 million contract signed in 2018 for four advanced Talwar class frigates.

India has previously undertaken MGT development domestically, with the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) pioneering the indigenous Kaveri Marine Gas Turbine (KMGT) in the early 2000s, with support from Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for the base frame. For indigenous naval vessels like the P-17 and Vikrant, General Electric LM2500 engines have been provided by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
