IIT-Madras Research Park unveils 1MW indigenous battery storage system

IIT-Madras Research Park (IITMRP) has inaugurated a 1 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), developed indigenously by its Centre for Excellence in Energy and Telecommunications (CEET). This marks the first stationary storage system installed in a building in India, as noted by Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Former President, IITMRP.

With the global shift towards renewable energy, large-scale energy storage systems are becoming crucial. Jhunjhunwala emphasised that such systems must be commercially viable for widespread adoption. He highlighted the cost benefits of the new system, noting that it reduces the overall electricity cost compared to current rates, including depreciation and interest.

Jhunjhunwala also discussed the importance of scaling green technology with commercial viability. “Subsidies can kick-start the process, but to scale up, we need commercial viability,” he said. IITMRP plans to expand its storage capacity to 5 MW in the future.

The research park’s 1.2 million sq ft campus consumes approximately 70 MWh of electricity on weekdays. It currently utilises a 1 MW rooftop solar system, 4 MW of group captive solar, and 2.1 MW of off-site captive wind power, achieving nearly 90% renewable energy usage. The new storage system will help manage energy intermittency and balance demand and supply around the clock. It serves various functions, including excess energy storage, peak shaving, and time-of-day usage.

The system’s thermal, electrical design, battery management hardware, software, and controls were developed in-house. The inauguration included a round-table discussion with industry leaders, startups, and academics on renewable energy, featuring Michelle Lujan Grisham, Governor of New Mexico, Chris Hodges, US Consul General in Chennai, and Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, Tamil Nadu’s Minister of Information Technology and Digital Services. Rajan advocated for Tamil Nadu to achieve a net-zero target by 2050, ahead of India’s 2070 goal, and highlighted the state's transmission losses due to underinvestment in grid infrastructure.
