HAL forms JV with France’s Safran Helicopter Engines for helicopter engines

On November 10, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) announced the establishment of a joint venture named Safhal Helicopter Engines Pvt Ltd with France-based Safran Helicopter Engines. The collaboration, as outlined in a statement by HAL, aims to undertake the design, development, certification, production, sale, and support of helicopter engines.

The initial focus of the joint venture is directed towards creating engines for the Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH). The partnership was formalised through an agreement signed in July between HAL's Chairman and Managing Director, R Madhavan, and Safran Helicopter Engines' CEO, Franck Saudo.

Madhavan expressed optimism about the collaboration, emphasising the longstanding partnership with Safran Helicopter Engines. He highlighted the intent to leverage HAL's extensive experience in manufacturing various aircraft and helicopter engines, with immediate attention on co-developing engines for the IMRH and its naval variant, the DBMRH. Madhavan also underscored the involvement of the Indian defence manufacturing ecosystem in this joint endeavour.

The Safran-HAL Aircraft Engines facility, a 50/50 joint venture between Safran Aircraft Engines and HAL, was inaugurated in a Special Economic Zone near the Kempegowda International Airport in July of the previous year. The facility primarily manufactures intricate piping for the LEAP engine.

In the recent past, HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines announced plans for industrial cooperation, focusing on manufacturing ring forgings for commercial aircraft engines. These products, produced jointly in Bengaluru, are intended to power the Airbus A320 Neo family and the Boeing 737 Max single-aisle airliners.

The collaboration between HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines extends beyond this venture, including the Shakti engine partnership. The Shakti engine, powering HAL-produced helicopters such as the Dhruv, Rudra, and the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), has already seen the production of over 500 engines.

Safran, with a presence in India for 65 years, operates 10 facilities and employs 750 individuals nationwide, showcasing a longstanding commitment to the Indian aerospace sector.
