Grind Master launches novel robotic grinding technology

Aurangabad (Maharashtra)

Grind Master has launched a first of its kind worldwide machine for robotic grinding of large castings. Grind Master ROBOFINISH team led by Sameer Kelkar conducted research and development (R&D) over four years resulting in an international project for deployment of this technology.

A leading mining industry casting maker, with worldwide foundries partnered with Grind Master ROBOFINISH in 2019 to solve various problems in fettling shops including poor health and safety conditions, inconsistency in quality and low productivity often leading to large WIP and business loss. The maker had approached several reputed solution providers in America and Europe and had one failed project in the past.

Grind Master ROBOFINISH abilities to solve challenges with innovative breakthroughs in process and software were demonstrated through several R&D projects that were conducted between 2019 and 2021. The results from these finally gave both the foundry and Grind Master the confidence to build a full machine. This first of its kind machine for automatic fettling and precision grinding of exotic material castings weighing upto 6 tonnes is now being launched by Grind Master.

With five patents filed during the advancements made in process, software and machine design, the resulting product is a landmark in development of robotic machining and places Grind Master in a global leadership position.

Grinding of castings is a major challenge globally – this operation is manually done in very hazardous conditions. Grind Master ROBOFINISH solutions were launched in 2012. With over 150 machines in operation worldwide, it is a well recognised solution. Grind Master has a technical collaboration with Roberts Sinto Corporation of USA for manufacturing and servicing machines in North America using ROBOFINISH Technology. It is an exceptional case where manufacturing technology is being exported out of India.

“Grinding large castings has been a big hurdle. We have a lot of experience with small and medium sized castings and were confident of developing a solution for larger castings. We are thrilled to have succeeded where many other international companies had failed. Our ROBOFINISH Team in particular Amol Ghule, Sohail Shaikh, Prashant Jadhav, Mahesh Kshirsagar, Swati Tekale, Sudeep Khadse, Anklesh Mohabe, Prajwal Mhaske and Onkar Kulkarni worked very hard to make this project a success,” said Sameer Kelkar, R&D Head and architect of the ROBOFINISH Technology.
