Global disruptions offer chance to enhance defence manufacturing capabilities

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan highlighted that global disruptions offer a valuable chance for the Indian defence sector to expand its manufacturing capabilities. He emphasised that these disruptions could enable India to transition from being an importer to an exporter of munitions and ammunition.

Speaking at the Ammo India 2024 Conference organised by FICCI, Gen Chauhan noted the current state of global geopolitical instability. “We are navigating an era of significant global disruptions. Amid the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA) of today’s world, the global arms industry faces a challenging demand-supply gap,” he said.

Gen Chauhan stressed the importance of Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) in defence, underlining its role in achieving strategic autonomy for the country. He also discussed various policy changes and reforms by the Ministry of Defence and the armed forces aimed at advancing the Make in India and Make for the World initiatives, particularly in ammunition manufacturing.

The CDS called for collaboration among the services, defence industries, and scientists, including academia, to further the nation’s self-reliance objectives.

The conference featured sessions on ammunition requirements for tanks, artillery, air defence, unmanned platforms, and future munitions. Gen Chauhan also inaugurated an exhibition showcasing advancements in self-reliance in munitions.
