G. Padmanabhan & Chandrayaan-3 team win Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar

Padmanabhan, a distinguished biochemist known for his research on malaria parasites, is honoured with the Vigyan Ratna for his lifetime contributions.
G. Padmanabhan, Former Director, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), the Chandrayaan-3 team, and Annapurni Subramaniam, Director, Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bengaluru, are among the inaugural recipients of the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar (RVP). The awards ceremony will take place at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre on August 23, marking the first National Space Day.
The RVP introduces four categories: Vigyan Ratna for lifetime achievement, Vigyan Shri for outstanding scientists of all ages, Vigyan Yuva for scientists under 45, and Vigyan Team for collaborative research efforts. This new set of awards was established last year, replacing previous science awards, including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize. The Vigyan Yuva Award now serves as the successor to the Bhatnagar Prize for young scientists.
Padmanabhan, a distinguished biochemist known for his research on malaria parasites, is honoured with the Vigyan Ratna for his lifetime contributions. He is celebrated for his work and has previously received the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.
The Chandrayaan-3 team, which successfully landed India’s first spacecraft on the Moon last year, has been awarded the Vigyan Team accolade.
The Vigyan Yuva Puraskar recipients include:
- Vivek Polshettiwar from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, recognized for his work in carbon capture technologies.
- Urbasi Sinha from Raman Research Institute, Bengaluru, known for her expertise in quantum research.
- Roxy Mathew Koll from Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, honored for his contributions to climate science.
Annapurni Subramaniam, along with 12 other scientists, will receive the Vigyan Shri Award. Her research focuses on the formation and evolution of star clusters and galaxies. Other Vigyan Shri winners include biologist Jayant Bhalchandra Udgaonkar, former IISER Pune director, and particle physicist Naba Kumar Mondal from Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata.
