Sarvam AI, a homegrown startup, has developed a Small Language Model (SLM) with two billion parameters, designed to be voice-enabled and multilingual, supporting 10 Indian languages.
Nandan Nilekani, Chairman, Infosys, emphasised that frugal engineering can make artificial intelligence (AI) more cost-effective in India, positioning the country as the global leader in AI use cases. Speaking at the launch of Sarvam AI's full-stack Generative AI platform, Nilekani advocated for the use of smaller, targeted, and secure AI models, rather than relying on large, complex systems.

Nilekani expressed strong support for Sarvam AI's innovation, stating, "India can build models that are both scalable and effective." The platform represents a significant step toward creating sovereign AI solutions tailored specifically for India, according to Pratyush Kumar and Vivek Raghavan, Co-founders, Sarvam AI.
