Addressing an event organized by the Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Advisor to the government, reiterated the importance of advancing Electric Vehicles (EVs) as part of initiatives like the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) and Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME). These endeavours are aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions, he emphasised.

Eminent scientists and thought leaders echoed similar sentiments, emphasising that the accelerated adoption of EVs, alongside initiatives like the National Hydrogen Mission, will drive India's trajectory towards achieving a net-zero target by 2070. Professor Sood, speaking at the event, underscored the significance of the EV Mission spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Science, Technology Innovation and Advisory Council (PM-STIAC), which is dedicated to establishing supportive standards and frameworks for EV integration.

"Significant investments in green hydrogen production are pivotal components of India's National Hydrogen Mission, critical for realising the net-zero targets by 2070," remarked Sood.

Additionally, he elaborated on the ongoing endeavors in Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) technologies, highlighting policies aimed at optimising costs and expanding industrial applications.

Further elaborating on the importance of innovation for national development, Professor Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, DST, emphasised the government's commitment to funding various research and development programs. He highlighted initiatives such as NIDHI and TDB, aimed at incubating startups and fostering entrepreneurship, as crucial steps in nurturing innovation.

"Technology is a double-edged sword: it reduces inefficiency but can also drive increased consumption. To combat this, focus on EVs, green hydrogen, carbon capture and energy-efficient habitats. Transitioning to renewable energy globally is essential to tackle climate change," said Professor Ashutosh Sharma, President, INSA and former secretary, DST.
