Daimler India Commercial Vehicles unveils mechatronics lab in Oragadam, TN

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), a subsidiary of Daimler Truck AG, Germany, has inaugurated a state-of-the-art mechatronics lab at its Oragadam facility in Tamil Nadu. This new lab is set to revolutionise the company's software architecture verification and validation processes, offering cost efficiencies of 70-80% compared to traditional methods.

DICV, which markets commercial vehicles under the BharatBenz brand in India, has integrated agile methodologies into the lab's operations. This approach enables the rapid identification and resolution of software bugs through a closed-loop feedback system, significantly enhancing the development process.

The Oragadam plant, spanning 400 acres, not only manufactures trucks ranging from 10 to 55 tons and BharatBenz buses but also produces Mercedes-Benz coaches and bus chassis. Additionally, DICV exports vehicles and parts for Daimler Truck’s other brands, including Fuso, Mercedes-Benz, and Freightliner, to over 60 markets worldwide.

Pradeep Kumar Thimmaiyan, President, Product Engineering and Chief Technology Officer, DICV, highlighted the strategic importance of the new lab, stating, "Our mechatronics lab marks a pivotal shift in our R&D efforts, bringing enhanced agility and fostering groundbreaking innovations. It serves as a hub for future electrical and electronic architectures, positioning us uniquely on the global stage."

The lab's advanced infrastructure includes a flashing station for pre-production verification of all electronic control units (ECUs), ensuring hardware and software compatibility before full-scale production, thereby minimising errors and reducing the need for costly re-releases. It also features an advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) setup that allows on-road data to be replicated in the lab, facilitating early software modifications and reducing vehicle dependency. Additionally, the lab enables safe verification of Driver State Monitoring (DSM) systems, eliminating the need for potentially risky in-vehicle trials.

DICV's new mechatronics lab aligns with the company’s long-term vision of "Make and Develop in India, for India and the World," underscoring its commitment to setting new benchmarks in the global commercial vehicle sector.
