COVID Impact: Machine tools industry may recover in Q3

Mumbai 

The COVID 19 outbreak occurred in Wuhan, China in December 2019. As of June 4, more than 6.42 million people had been infected with COVID 19, and it has caused in excess of 380,000 deaths worldwide. The spread of COVID 19 has delivered a severe blow to the global economy. Due to the disruption caused by COVID 19 in the first half of the year, the recovery of the machinery industry has been delayed. However, Taiwan Excellence enterprises that provide automation equipment related to pneumatic components and components for transmission systems and positioning systems such as Hiwin Technologies, TBI MOTION, and Taiwan Chelic, have received short-term urgent orders from the medical, 5G, automation, semiconductor, electronics, and panel industries. Business for these companies continues to grow and orders are expected to soar after the epidemic is controlled.

Hiwin Technologies markets its products to the world under its own name, HIWIN, and is the world's second largest company in transmission control and system technology. Its production of precision ball screws is the first in the world, and its production of linear guideways is second globally. The company's global market share of industrial cartesian robots is as high as 40 per cent. In 2020, Hiwin's Robot Reducer received recognition by winning the Taiwan Excellence Gold Award. Hiwin has won Taiwan Excellence Gold and Silver Awards trophies for 20 years consecutively and this year is the company's 27th trophy. At the same time, Hiwin’s Datorker Robot Reducer, makes it just the third company in the world that mass produces harmonic gear reducers that meet the international standard of over 7000 hours’ service life, breaking the monopoly of Japanese companies over the market. 

Eric Y T Chuo, President of the Hiwin Group, said, “Although the economy was affected by the epidemic in the first half of the year, the mid- and long-term supply chain reorganisation and labour shortages will contribute to the growth of automation equipment demand later in the year. The demand for ball screws and linear guideway products still exists and is expected to bounce back in the third quarter, and resume normal volumes in the fourth quarter.”

Taiwan Chelic has won Taiwan Excellence Awards with six of its products, namely the vacuum electro-pneumatic regulator, angular electric gripper, magnetic rodless cylinder, vacuum energy-saving large-capacity precision pressure regulator valve, modular F.R.L combinations, and modularized vacuum ejector manifold.

Chelic pointed out that Industry 4.0 is already a growing trend. In the future, post-epidemic production line manufacturing will rely even more on smart production to reduce the infection risk of contact due to clustering. Thus, enterprises will step up their efforts to invest in smart factories. In addition to machine automation, due to the influence of the Industrial IoT trend, cyber-physical systems will also drive a new wave of equipment creation. Chelic hopes that its own products can provide customers with complete solutions and enter the production lines of automated factories around the world.

Due to the impact of the epidemic, many international exhibitions have been postponed or cancelled as international travel is almost impossible.
