CEAT becomes the 1st in tyre industry across the world to win the Deming Grand Prize

CEAT, India's leading tyre manufacturer, has been awarded the prestigious Deming Grand Prize making it the first tyre brand in the world to receive this rare distinction in 2023. “We are deeply honoured by the Deming Grand Prize. It's a remarkable achievement for CEAT. Our gratitude goes to our valuable partners and vendors for their support, because this is an organisational-level achievement, which is where our partners, vendors, raw material suppliers, etc, come along. It reflects our robust business processes and systems, which eventually lead us to create reliable and dependable products,” said Manohar Sethpalani, Vice President QBM (Business Excellence) at CEAT Limited on the win.

The Deming Grand Prize is an illustrious honour for organisations that have achieved the Deming Prize and have continued to sustain and elevate their Total Quality Management (TQM) practices for more than three years. CEAT implements Quality Based Management (QBM) for its quality analysis. “We focus on 3 steps, putting the customer-centric goals in place, deploying them to the various individuals, and then implementing them in the right way. Quality is about improving across all the parameters, quality, cost delivery, safety and morale. This is the philosophy of QBM for us which helps us to maintain high quality standards throughout,” added Sethpalani.

Companies that operate at high levels of TQM stand out in their customer-centricity, systematic way of working and people capabilities. “We believe in improving the business processes and systems through PDCA which is Plan, Do, Check, Act. This PDCA helps us in improving our systems and processes, not only in manufacturing, but in the overall organisation including HR, sales, and admin functions,” he said.

Deming Grand was institutionalized in 1969 and is one of the longstanding quality awards presented by the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) for excellence in Total Quality Management (TQM). CEAT is one of only 33 companies worldwide to win this honour and the only tyre brand on a global stage.

CEAT has been on the TQM journey for over fifteen years and was the first tyre company outside Japan to win the prestigious Deming Prize in 2017. Talking about the company’s journey and changes over time, Sethpalani added, “Technology plays a very important role, not only in improving the quality but also in having sustenance. We have leveraged robotic automation within the organisation. Technology interventions have enhanced our management systems, relations with vendors and suppliers, and waste elimination. We believe it's not only about maintaining the quality, but it is also about the productivity. With technology, we are able to reduce our setup times and produce more tires. All of this together helps to enhance the quality.”

Speaking on the further raising the quality bars of the CEAT products, he said, “We started this journey in 2009, but there is no end to it. It is a continuous one which keeps improving further. We consider the Deming Grand Prize as a milestone but not an end for us. Going forward, we are focusing more on building the right capabilities which are needed to achieve a purpose to have a path-breaking experience to a customer.”
