Calderys sets sustainability benchmark at Odisha refractories plant

Calderys, a global leader in high-temperature industrial solutions, reinforces its commitment to a sustainable future by integrating environmentally responsible practices at its flagship greenfield development—the Calderys Plant in East & South India, also known as CAPES. Located in Odisha, this major single-site project will focus on manufacturing refractories and steel casting fluxes for India’s growing industrial market. Envisioned as a next-generation facility, CAPES is steadily implementing eco-conscious industrial processes throughout its construction and operations.

Sustainability at CAPES is integral, not supplementary. The plant adopts a holistic strategy to minimise its environmental footprint across energy use, water conservation, and emissions reduction. Notably, it aims to source 20% of its power from solar energy within five years—reinforcing Calderys’ emphasis on clean energy integration and carbon footprint reduction.

The facility is also designed for zero effluent discharge, ensuring that no wastewater leaves the premises. This is achieved through cutting-edge effluent and sewage treatment systems, enabling full water recycling for landscaping and auxiliary purposes. Additionally, the plant will incorporate 95 groundwater recharge pits to promote aquifer replenishment and long-term water sustainability.

In parallel, a green belt development programme is underway, aiming to create 33% green cover on-site. Of the targeted 2,000 trees, 800 have already been planted, demonstrating Calderys’ commitment to biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and a healthier local ecosystem.

Air quality remains a top priority. CAPES employs advanced emission and dust control mechanisms that ensure ambient air is five times cleaner than typical refractory plants. This is accomplished through high-efficiency filtration systems, significantly reducing harmful particulate emissions.

Moreover, the plant embraces circular economy principles by integrating scrap and recycled materials into its production workflows. This approach helps reduce industrial waste and enhances resource efficiency, underscoring Calderys’ dedication to responsible manufacturing and innovation-led sustainability.

Ish Mohan Garg, Senior Vice President for the Asia Pacific region at Calderys, stated, “Sustainability at Calderys is embedded across our operations. The CAPES facility reflects our vision for future-ready manufacturing where environmental care and industrial growth co-exist. These measures are part of our commitment to the planet, the communities we serve, and India’s national decarbonisation ambitions.”

With its multi-pronged green strategy, CAPES sets a new industry benchmark for environmentally responsible industrial development, aligned with India’s sustainability agenda and global climate goals.

Calderys’ CAPES plant in Odisha marks a milestone in the company’s global expansion, becoming the world’s largest single-site greenfield project for refractories and casting fluxes. Spanning 40 acres, the site will eventually house five production lines and modern testing facilities, substantially increasing capacity to serve the growing demand in India’s eastern and southern markets. Full-scale production is scheduled to commence in the second half of 2026, although one manufacturing line is already operational. Updates on the project’s development are available on the Calderys website.
